Positive Behaviour Support - PBS Kids
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an approach that helps people understand why certain behaviours occur and develop positive ways to communicate their needs, manage emotions, and participate in everyday life.
In Australia, Positive Behaviour Support is commonly used within the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to support people with disability, including children and adults who may experience behaviours of concern.
Positive Behaviour Support aims to:
Improve quality of life — help people feel safe, valued and included.
Improve communication — help people express their needs, feelings and preferences.
Develop emotional regulation — teach strategies for managing frustration, anxiety and distress.
Build independence — develop everyday living, social and decision-making skills.
Reduce behaviours of concern — identify and address the reasons behind behaviours rather than simply trying to stop them.
Create supportive environments — help families, carers, educators and support workers respond consistently.
NDIS behaviour support practitioners must meet the applicable suitability requirements. Where regulated restrictive practices are involved, additional safeguards, authorisation requirements and reporting obligations apply. PBS prioritises positive, least-restrictive approaches and aims to reduce and eliminate restrictive practices.
Positive Behaviour Support seeks to understand what a person needs and help them achieve a better quality of life through respectful, evidence-informed support.
